Summit Objective

To examine issues raised by Indian gaming since the passage of Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988.

Overview

In 1988 Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). The Act established the ground rules and process for tribes to set up gambling operations on tribal lands. The Act led to a boom in tribal gaming operations. The jobs created by and the profits from those operations has led to reduced unemployment on tribal reservations and investments in needed infrastructure, education and health services.

In recent years, new issues have surfaced that have caused friction between some gaming tribes and state and local governments. The purpose of the WGA Summit on Indian Gaming is to examine these issues from both sides and to seek common ground on possible changes to IGRA.
