April 1998 This site offers a comprehensive bibliography of the literature on the economic benefits of open space. It contains over 100 citations addressing many different dimensions of this issue. In addition to the articles and reports listed in the Bibliography, entries are broken out and excerpted by 19 sub-topics in the Citations by Subject Area (see Table of Contents below). The Open Lands Initiative is a project of the Western Governors' Association to assist western states that are grappling with growth issues and seeking to promote the conservation of open space. The articles cited below address many of the questions commonly raised in public debates about open space. They should be useful to anyone looking for substantive information and guidance about the value of open space and alternative land uses, including state natural resources, agriculture, economic development and local affairs agencies; legislative staff; landowners; non-profit groups; and other interested parties. The material was developed by a WGA partner in the Open Lands Initiative, the Trust for Public Land (TPL). TPL is working with WGA to assist western states identify and develop statewide strategies for funding open space, emphasizing conservation strategies for private farm, ranch, and timber lands.
