April 14th Field Tours
Preliminary Itinerary

Optional field trips for meeting participants and one guest. Each field trip includes transportation and lunch, except for the Solar Energy tour. If you are interested in participating in one of the field trips, please indicate the tour you would like to take when you register.  Please note, that a field trip may be cancelled and your money refunded, if there is not sufficient interest.

All tours depart from the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Albuquerque.

Tour 1—Solar Energy Tour (total mileage: 60)

Location: Albuquerque area

Security Clearance: People wanting to tour Sandia National Lab must submit information for security clearance by March 25th (foreign nationals) or April 7th (U.S. citizens)

Itinerary:
This tour starts with a visit to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center (12th Street and Indian School Road) near historic Old Town Albuquerque.  The center hosts a 10 kW grid-tied photovoltaic system that also serves as a carport shading unit in the visitors’ parking lot.  Briefing provided on the PV system, its operation and benefits by the project principals, Sacred Power Corporation.  Tour participants will also have an opportunity to see the Center and its exhibits.  After 1 hour at the Center, the tour proceeds to Sandia National Laboratories, where participants will tour the Solar Power Tower and Stirling Dish Technology.  Briefing provided on these Concentrating Solar Power technologies by Sandia officials.

Timetable:  12:30 -5 p.m  Fee:  $25 
 

Tour 2—Coal Mine/Coal-Fired Powerplant Tour (total mileage: 250)

Location: Grants-Gallup area in western NM

Itinerary:
The first stop on this tour is the Lee Ranch
surface coal mine, located 35 miles northwest of Grants.  Briefing provided at site by Lee Ranch Coal Company officials. After touring the mine, participants will proceed to the Escalante powerplant near Prewitt, a 235-megawatt, coal-fired electric generation unit owned and operated by Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association.  Lunch provided before the powerplant tour.  Briefing at powerplant provided by Tri-State officials.  On the return trip, the tour may stop briefly at Acoma Pueblo (“Sky City”), as time permits.

Tour 3—Wind Energy Tour (total mileage: 350)

 Location:  Ft. Sumner area in eastern NM

Itinerary:
This tour involves a visit to the New Mexico Wind Energy Center, a 204-megawatt wind farm owned and operated by FPL Energy.  It is the 3rd largest wind facility in the world.  A briefing on the wind farm facility will be provided by FPL Energy officials and representatives of Public Service Company of New Mexico, which is buying all power from the facility.  A lunch will be provided.

Timetable: 7:30 a.m.- 5 p.m.  Fee:  $50

Tour 4—Santa Fe/Bandelier Tour (total mileage: 180) CANCELED

Location:  Santa Fe & Los Alamos area

Itinerary:
This tour includes a visit to Santa Fe—the “City Different” and capitol of NM.  Participants will be dropped off at Santa Fe Plaza and have several hours to tour the downtown area, including the Palace of the Governors, Georgia O’Keefe Museum, State Capitol, etc.  Lunch in Santa Fe.  The tour will then proceed to Bandelier National Monument for a visit of this world-class archaeological site.
