Log of voyage from Liverpool, England to New York, U.S.A. in 1836.
Presumed to have been written by Edward Hodgson. Written in a nice
script. Parts illegible.
River Mersey, May 1st, 1836, at Liverpool [England]. On Board the
British Ship Harriet, 720 tons of Liverpool. Master, Captain James
Galt, first mate, Benjamin Roberts, second mate John Carpenter, and twenty
four men and boys constituting the crew. At 8 A.M. Captain Galt came on
board, heaved the anchor at 10 got raised when Steamboat Huskinson took us
in tow and laid us alongside the pier, took in more water and proceeded to
sea with steamboat.
May 2nd.
Fresh breezes at 2 P.M. Pilot left us, got all clear for sea, at three the
steamboat threw us off (and proceeded on her passage to Dublin), we set all
sail at 9 lower top gallient studding said, Holyhead light house, borne E ½
N.E. 15 miles, at 4 A.M. Bardsley light, borne E. By N. Distant 13 miles,
increasing breezes. Lat. 51..49.

Fresh breezes, then squally double reefed, mizzentop and maintop mast stay
sail at 4 P.M. weather very hazy, course N. By W. West. Lat. 51 -- 20

Very strong breezes and hazy, increased to heavy gale and rain. W.N.W.
winds, S.S.W. Lat. By Aut. 51..2, by very close obscure observation 50..50

8th.
Squally strong breezes in flying Jibb & Mizzentop gallant said,
increased almost to a hurricane. Shipped some seas, plenty of water between
decks. Irishmen well ducked, fire out and berths swimming. Ship rolling
about, many thinking she was going over with every sea, became very much
afraid, those better accustomed to such scenes was satisfied to keep
themselves in their beds which I did with great difficulty. Knees and elbows
sore as a bile by holding on to keep from rolling out of bed. Courses N.W.

9th.
More moderate breezes with cloudy weather, wore ship course N.N.E. winds
West. Lat. 51..9, saw many of Mother Carey Chickens and some few divers.
10th.
Spoke to brig. Clitus of Saltcoat, bound to Morimichia, out 11 days.

Day squally and heavy seas, W.S.W. observed Lat. 49..40
12.
Strong gales, wore ship took 3d reef in sails, 10 P.M. tremendous squalls
